Follow a question

Reading can start with curiosity rather than a target. A short essay, a chapter, or a few pages may be enough to introduce a new idea.

Notice the sentence that makes you pause. Write down why it caught your attention, rather than trying to summarize everything.

Take a useful note

  • Name the idea in your own words.
  • Keep the source so you can return to it.
  • Add a question you would like to explore.

An unfinished book can still offer something useful. A familiar passage can look different when read at another time.

Let one idea linger

Instead of immediately choosing the next thing to read, give an idea a little time. A conversation, a walk, or a blank page can help it settle.
